SAFETY
8/12/2010
To avoid injury ALWAYS wear adequate safety protection including impact-resistant eye protection, safety shoes, leather gloves, full face shield and leather apron whenever using coated abrasives.
Belt Grinding and Polishing
- NEVER run an abrasive belt on unfamiliar machinery.
- USE workplace fixtures whenever possible: a secured workpiece affords some protection if workplace jamming occurs.
- ADEQUATE exhaust/ventilation systems should be used to avoid inhalation of dust particles due to grinding operations.
- DO NOT use machinery for purposes other than intended in their design.
- ALWAYS check grinder spindle for run-out (wobble), contact wheel for balance, face trueness and run-out, and idler pulley for run-out balance.
- INSPECT machinery for safe operating conditions: the abrasive belt, idler assembly and contact wheel should be enclosed within sheet metal hood; adjustable deflector should be installed within ¼" of abrasive belt working surface: employ special precautions with inflammable or other hazardous materials.
- DISCS, abnormally curled, or with irregularities, fractures, nicks, cuts at the center hole or edges should not be used.
- NEVER grind without a proper back-up pad.
- THE DISC should never overhang the edge of the pad more than ¼" at the smallest radius.
- NEVER use another disc for a back-up pad.
- CHECK the spindle for wobble.
- DISCS should be brought up to full recommended speed before grinding.
- THE DISC should be eased onto the workpiece, inclined at a 5 to 10 degree angle to the surface to be ground.
- AVOID jamming, snagging or plunging the edge of the disc in the work surface.
- FLOW of sparks should be downward.
- NEVER grind near inflammable materials.
Follow these guidelines to prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of coated abrasives.
- Keep stockroom at constant levels of humidity (40-50%) and temperature (60-85 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Keep all cartons and boxes away from damp or cold walls and floor where moisture absorption may occur.
- Store coated abrasives away from all heat sources.
- Coated Abrasives, particularly paper belts, should be removed from shipping cartons and allowed to come to moisture equilibrium with room conditions before use.
- For easy handling and storage, belts should be kept in original packaging until needed.
- Store rolls flat on shelves or pallets, do not store on edge.
- Fibre discs removed from original packaging should be stored in a suitable holder and kept under pressure.
- Belts removed from their original packaging should be rolled up and stood on edge on clean shelving. They may also be draped over a large cylindrical object, but never hang a belt from a nail or peg as this will cause creasing and cracking of the abrasive.
