Honing Rings and Honing Wheels

Honing wheels with internal teeth

Tool description.
Honing wheels with internal teeth comprise a resinoid matrix, with aluminum oxide or silicon carbide abrasive embedded in it as the abrasive media. The essential quality criteria are homogeneous grit distribution in the bond plus hardness, rigidity, and wear resistance of the wheel, particularly in order to ensure profile retention of the tooth shape during the machining process.

The precision abrasive machining process with these high-precision quality tools improves the surface quality of tooth flanks considerably, thus ensuring that the gears run with lower noise and ensuring long gear life. Honing wheels with internal teeth have been developed as special precision tools for finishing hardened tooth flanks on helical gears, long pinion shafts and cluster gears; they have proven their viability and performance capability in various different applications over a period of some years.

Hermes research and development has designed this increased-strength honing wheel to meet the trend for achieving not only surface improvement, but also profile correction of the tooth shape, i.e. correction of the distortion from the hardening process.

The "New Honing wheel Generation" (NHG) is suitable for use on all known gear honing machines, particularly those with improved statistical and dynamic rigidity and high drive power.

It can be adapted to various different machining operations by varying the materials used in its composition.
